　このページでは1997年の全米ナンバーワンソングを紹介します（このページついて）。ここ数年、音楽の聞き方が変わって来たことが、チャート集計にも影響を与えているようです。

　2018年から、ストリーミングデータ（音楽配信）の集計方法を変更しました。また、これまではチャートの日付の1週間前の火曜日（つまり11日前）に発表されていましたが、データ集計から発表までの期間が短くなり、日付の4日前に発表され、よりリアルタイムに近い発表になりました。たとえば最新チャートなら2024年12月28日、発表は12月24日となります。

　初登場1位で登場、その後14週に渡りトップの座をキープした曲で、年が明けてからも2週間ナンバーワンでした。2010年時点で3700万枚という桁外れのセールスを記録し、もっとも売れたシングルとなったこの曲は、1997年8月31日にパパラッチに追われて不慮の事故死をとげた元プリンセスダイアナを追悼してライヴ・レコーディング（プロデュースはジョージ・マーティン）された、エルトンにとっては古い曲です。
　この曲は1973年にマリリン・モンローに捧げられ、邦題も「風の中の灯のように」と名付けられていた曲でしたが、今回は一部歌詞を替えて歌われました。それほどエルトンにとってダイアナは大切な友人だったのです。
